Here are 3 keys to follow when you're looking to book your first podcast interview:
1. QUICK BITES TASTE BETTER.
Yes, you have a lot to say. But podcast hosts are looking for someone who can deliver quick, digestible tips/ talking points to give listeners immediate value. Unless you're pitching a super interesting personal story (how you built a mega-business, overcame adversity, etc), then this is how your content should be packaged.
2. START WITH WHO YOU KNOW, THEN LEVERAGE IT.
Take a closer look at your network. These days, it’s impossible to throw a rock without hitting someone who hosts their own podcast. If their audience somewhat mirrors yours, then ask them (or someone who knows them) for an opportunity. But lead with the value you have to offer their listeners, not with them doing you a "favor". Tip: Most people can't tell how many "followers" a podcast has, they're just impressed that you were featured on one. So stop aiming for the ones with a lot of competition, and use the smaller ones as examples of how you perform when pitching larger outlets later.
3. PITCH AROUND A SPECIAL DAY.
If you're in fashion, you should be looking ahead at the micro-holidays that relate to your business. National Thriftstore Day is in August. This means you should be pitching to fashion podcasts now about being available to do a show about three ways to save on buying for new trends in honor of that holiday. Snag relevant, available days weeks (and sometimes months) in advance in order to be considered a shoe-in.
